1. Overview
Deckhand (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is a mobile application that connects to marine multifunction displays to provide engine monitoring and predictive maintenance intelligence. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the Deckhand app and website (deckhand.tech).
2. Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect your email address and a securely hashed password. We do not store passwords in plain text.
Boat Information
You provide your boat's name, make, model, year, engine brand, and current engine hours. This information is used to personalize your maintenance schedule and health predictions.
Engine Data
When connected to a compatible Simrad, Lowrance, or B&G multifunction display, Deckhand reads engine sensor data including RPM, coolant temperature, oil pressure, battery voltage, fuel consumption rate, engine hours, and transmission gear state. This data is captured automatically during trips and stored locally on your device and synced to our cloud database.
Location Data
With your permission, Deckhand collects GPS coordinates during active trips to record your route on a map. Location data is only collected while the engine is running and a trip is in progress. You can deny location permission and the app will function normally without route tracking.
Maintenance Records
Service history entries you log (service type, date, engine hours, cost, mechanic, notes) are stored to build your boat's maintenance history.
3. How We Use Your Information
- Provide real-time engine monitoring and trip logging
- Generate predictive maintenance recommendations based on your engine's actual usage patterns
- Calculate your Boat Health Score and wear factor
- Send push notifications for upcoming or overdue service
- Generate your Boat Health Report (PDF)
- Sync your data across devices via our cloud backend
- Improve our predictive algorithms (using aggregated, anonymized data only)
4. Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored in two places:
- On your device — Engine readings, trips, and maintenance records are stored locally in an encrypted SQLite database. The app works fully offline.
- In the cloud — Data is synced to our Supabase backend (hosted on AWS) with row-level security policies ensuring you can only access your own data. All data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS encryption.
Authentication tokens are stored in your device's secure keychain (iOS Keychain / Android Keystore).
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your individual engine data, trip history, or maintenance records with third parties. We may share aggregated, anonymized data for research and product improvement purposes.
Third-party services we use:
- Supabase — Database and authentication
- RevenueCat — Subscription management
- Expo — Push notifications and app updates
- Vercel — Website hosting and analytics
6. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your data at any time through the app
- Export your data via the Boat Health Report (PDF)
- Delete your account and all associated data through Settings → Delete Account
- Opt out of location tracking by denying the permission
- Opt out of push notifications through your device settings
7. Children's Privacy
Deckhand is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app or by email. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
